Egypt: New customs clearance requirements for M1 passenger cars

 

The Egyptian Ministry of Trade and Industry has issued a decree specifying the requirements for customs clearance of imported M1 passenger vehicles.  The decree is called Decree No. 9/2022 of the Egyptian Ministry of Trade and Industry of January 5, 2022.

Affected are vehicles with up to seven seats other than the driver, imported for trading purposes.  The decree got effective one month after its publication in the Egyptian Gazette.

Its requirements include the following:

  • Certified maintenance points must be available. Their capacities must be proportional to the number of vehicles sold annually on the local market.
  • The most important spare parts in relation to the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule must be available for at least 15% of the vehicles.
  • The vehicle must have at least two airbags.

The purpose of the decree is to ensure that vehicles imported to the local market meet safety and security conditions.”  The decision is said to comply with auto quality standards and aims to maintain the consumer’s safety.
