It specifies the requirements, which include safety characteristics and inspection criteria for imported used motor vehicles of categories M1, M2, M3, N1, N2, N3 and O with the exception of category L.

According to the standard, all used vehicles intended for import in any of the following conditions shall not be allowed into the country:

  • Salvaged vehicles with major damages
  • Originally manufactured right-hand drive vehicles
  • Over-aged vehicles
  • Vehicles to be assembled from parts imported as spare parts will not be allowed

The standard further defines the specific requirements that the vehicle must meet with regard to steering, brakes, seats, vehicle entrance, seatbelts, lighting devices and reflectors, audible warning devices, speedometers, engine, HVAC, tyres, glazing materials, rear-view mirrors, wipers and marking for electric and hybrid-electric vehicles.

The required documents for the import are:

  • Vehicle Identification Number Report
  • Vehicle Inspection Report
  • Vehicle Clearance Certificate

Only importers registered with the Ghana Standards Authority are allowed to import used vehicles.
