Chile: New emission standard applicable to heavy vehicles
Chile has published Resolution No. 497 of May 16, 2022, which approves the Draft Emission Standard Applicable to Heavy Vehicles and submits it to public consultation.
The Resolution, which is in the process of citizen consultation at the national level, aims to regulate the emissions of atmospheric pollutants generated by heavy vehicles, which mostly use diesel as fuel. These emissions of substances, such as nitrous oxides and particulate matter, generate adverse health effects that directly impact the inhabitants of urban centers with higher population density. The World Health Organization (WHO) has established that particulate matter emissions generated by diesel engines are associated with acute and chronic diseases.
The proposed emission values and the measurements methods are based on the EU emission standards. As the Resolution says:
“The mediations will be carried out through the worldwide harmonized driving test cycles of transitory conditions or stationary conditions in accordance with Regulation (CE) No. 595, of June 18, 2009, of the European Parliament and of the Council, relating to the homologation of motor vehicles and engines with regard to emissions from heavy-duty vehicles (Euro VI) and access to information on vehicle repair and maintenance and amending Regulation (EC) No 715/ 2007 and Directive 2007/46/EC.”
The proposed date of adoption of the Resolution is the second semester 2023.
