EU: Public consultation on a new ‘roadworthiness package’ for vehicles.
The EU Commission has launched a public consultation regarding a new legislative package on vehicle roadworthiness.
The EU’s ‘roadworthiness package’ currently consists of 3 directives covering:
- periodic roadworthiness tests
- technical roadside inspections of commercial vehicles
- vehicle registration documents.
It has been in force since 20 May 2018. This evaluation will assess how the roadworthiness directives have improved road safety, and will identify possible gaps.
Roadworthiness inspections of vehicles are essential not just for road safety but also for maintaining a vehicle’s environmental performance over its lifetime.
Due to technological/regulatory developments, vehicles in the EU are becoming technically more complex. To keep pace, this initiative aims to adapt the way vehicles are inspected.
Better exchange of relevant vehicle roadworthiness data at EU level is also needed to enforce road safety measures more effectively.
The public consultation is available HERE.
The consultation period is open until 28 September 2022.
