Ecuador: New technical regulation for safety glass

 

Ecuador has published a new technical regulation for automotive safety glass: draft of the First Revision of the Ecuadorian Technical Regulation PRTE 084 (1R) “safety glass for motor vehicles” (Proyecto de la Primera Revisión del Reglamento Técnico Ecuatoriano PRTE 084 (1R) “vidrios de seguridad para vehículos automotores”).

This Ecuadorian technical regulation applies to the following products used in motor vehicles belonging to the vehicle categories established in NTE INEN 2656 “Vehicle classification”; Whether these are national or imported products that are marketed in Ecuador:

  • Safety glass for vehicle categories: L, M, N, O and T:
  • Laminated safety glass,
  • Tempered safety glass.

In terms of technical requirements, the regulation refers to the UN Regulation 43.  Moreover, it contains requirements for the container, packaging and labeling:

5.1 Labeling information must be presented in a visible place; marked or engraved, permanently, with clear and easy-to-read characters, in the Spanish language, without prejudice to the fact that they may also be presented in other additional languages.

5.2 The products subject to this Ecuadorian technical regulation must contain the labeling information marked or engraved directly on the product.

5.3 Product labeling must contain at least the following information:

5.3.1 Glass trademark or vehicle trademark,

5.3.2 Type of glass or, the symbol or code that indicates the type of glass; in accordance with this Ecuadorian technical regulation,

5.3.3 Homologation code or symbol (for those products that have approval for brand use granted by a Competent and Recognized Official Body, e.g. DOT, INMETRO, CCC, NOM, Type approval “E”), and

5.3.4 Glass identification code or symbol related to the batch or manufacturing date.

5.4 Additional for marketing, the products subject to this Ecuadorian technical regulation must contain the following information to be included directly or through labels

on the product or packaging or container:

5.4.1 Country of origin.

5.4.2 Name or company name and the Single Taxpayer Registry (RUC) number of the manufacturer or importer (see note 1).
