Canada: Update of regulations for vehicle seats

To enhance road safety across the country, Transport Canada mandates that all new and imported vehicles, tires, and child restraints undergo rigorous safety certification. To better protect young passengers and streamline compliance for manufacturers, the agency is currently modernizing the Motor Vehicle Restraint System and Booster Seats Safety Regulations. These updates will refine safety standards for restraint systems and vehicle anchorages, ensuring Canadian regulations keep pace with evolving safety technology.

The proposal to update the regulatory requirements concerning the safety of restraint systems and vehicle anchorages (2026) covers 7 documents totalling 173 pages (available in English and French):

  • Consultation (2 pages)
  • Background (9 pages)
  • Proposed TSD 213a: Child restraint systems – side impact protection (21 pages)
