India: New Automotive Industry Standards 2024

India has recently published several new/revised AIS (Automotive Industry Standards). AIS are technical standards for the automotive sector in India. These standards are aligned with the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), which outline the conditions under which automotive products in India can obtain a Type Approval Certificate (TAC) for market entry. The TAC is mandatory for products and components that must meet specific technical and safety requirements. Components are awarded a TAC certificate after successfully completing the certification process. The primary goal of this system is to enhance road safety in India by ensuring the quality of transportation.

The new AIS published in September are, among others:

  • AIS-200 Retro Reflective Devices (RRD)
  • AIS-157A Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles-Constructional Equipment Vehicles (CEV)
  • AIS-099 (Rev.1) Lateral Collision
  • AIS-098 (Rev.1) Offset frontal Collision
  • AIS-008 (Rev.3) Installation of lighting and light signaling devices for 4 Wheeled Vehicles
  • AIS-185 Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS) for M1 and N1 vehicles
  • AIS-201 Frontal Collision with focus on Restraint Systems
  • AlS-191 (Part-1) Emergency Lane Keeping System (ELKS)
  • AIS-192 Event Data Recorder (EDR)
  • AIS-188 Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS)

Introduced in 1989 alongside the CMVR, the AIS certification or TAC is based on UNECE standards. The CMVR covers regulations regarding vehicle registration, traffic control, vehicle production, maintenance, and more. The AIS guidelines are issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the governing body of India’s automotive sector. Type Approval certification occurs at two levels: component certification and whole vehicle homologation. Components requiring certification under AIS must first complete the component-level process before vehicle homologation can proceed.

For automotive components, both the product itself and Conformity of Production (CoP) are evaluated. Upon successful certification, the Type Approval Certificate (TAC) is issued by certification bodies like ARAI or iCAT in India.
